Weingut Lang - Tuniberg
Our first supplier and inspiration for starting Petersfield Wines, Lang is a superb example of the growers producing the very best of the new, dry, high quality wines in Germany. Most of his wine is eagerly sought after locally, and does not get further than Freiburg, let alone being sold abroad!
Clemens and Karola have their small, 7 hectare vineyard on the Tuniberg hill near Freiburg, Baden, in the south of Germany. The vineyard, on the south side of Tuniberg, has an unusually warm microclimate, which combined with the fine Loess soil, enables the production of soft, fruity wines which are full of character.
The Langs make their wine by traditional methods, with negligible agrochemicals and hand-picked fruit. Red wines are initially matured for 18 months in 700 litre Limousin oak barrels, producing soft, dry, full flavoured light wines. The whites are matured in steel barrels, resulting in a clean, clear, dry, fruity set of wines. No sugar is needed as the warm climate results in there being enough in the grapes to produce these dry wines of character. The spaetlese wines are particularly strong ( 13.5 - 14.5% ) as they are made with grapes left on the vines for an additional 2-3 weeks and the extra sugar produced has been fully fermented out.
